This extensive MIA and maintenance facility is a good demonstration of Hawkins Group’s ability to handle complex, multi-purpose projects from design through to commissioning.
The project included construction of the entire Mine Industrial Area (MIA), including drive-through, six-bay maintenance workshops for CAT797 ultra-class trucks, and a fuel and lube facility.
The design for the site was based on our traffic flow analysis and ensures separation of light and heavy vehicles. Major building components were fabricated in our workshop and we sourced the specialised tanks and overhead cranes and transported them to site.
Construction Scope
The construction included a range of buildings and their associated roadwork and utilities. Facilities included:
• Main administration building
• Boilermakers’ shed
• Separate heavy vehicle and light vehicle wash facilities
• Jacking slab and tyre handling facility, including storage shed and offices
• Lubricant facility including pod storage rack
• Fuel farm facility.
Workshop specifications
The maintenance workshop was a central component of the project and featured a 40 metre clear span with a 25 tonne overhead crane. It also housed:
• Pre-start and tools area
• High-voltage workshop with a 12.5 tonne overhead crane
• Maintenance administration offices overlooking the workshop area
• Stores facilities including full-height racking on a mezzanine
• Showers and ablutions facilities.
Fuel and lube facilities
The lube facility consisted of two multi-compartment storage tanks linked to the main workshop while the fuel farm consisted of five 100,000 litre fuel storage tanks linked to a fuel-tanker unloading bay and heavy vehicle dispensing bay. In total, we installed, tested and commissioned approximately 800 metres of pipework.
The project also featured the design and construction of the Emergency Response Centre and the installation of a fuel management system that transmits data to the suppliers’ local and offsite control points.
